This recipe is perfect for when strawberries are ripe and bursting with flavor. It’s just as good with or without liqueur. Makes a gorgeous presentation for warm weather holidays. Add blueberries if serving on Memorial Day, or the Fourth of July.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled rinsed, and sliced
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup Grand Marnier or other orange liqueur
  • Store-bought shortcakes
  • Ready-to-use whipped cream (or make your own, see below)

Homemade Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest, optional

Instructions

  1. Place the rinsed and sliced strawberries into a medium bowl.
  2. Sprinkle the orange zest and sugar over the strawberries and add the Grand Marnier.
  3. Mix well, cover, and refrigerate for minimum 2 hours, more is better.
  4. If making whipped cream, place a medium bowl and the blender beaters into the refrigerator for an hour or so until cold. Pour the heavy whipping cream into the cold bowl, add 1 tablespoon sugar and a teaspoon of lemon zest, optional, and beat until soft peaks appear.
  5. When ready to serve, arrange the shortcakes on a platter. Spoon equal amounts of the macerated strawberries on top of the cakes and add a dollop of whipped cream to each.
