This is the perfect fall cocktail. The tart cherries are an ideal match for the smoky mezcal flavors, and the orange liqueur adds a bright citrusy note. The smoked salt and sugar rim is optional but worth the extra work—it is that good!
Ingredients
Cocktail Rim
- 2 tablespoons smoked coarse salt, optional
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Cocktail
- 3/4 cup tart no-sugar-added cherry juice
- 4 ounces favorite mezcal
- 1 ounce orange liqueur (such as Cointreau)
- 1-2 ounces simple syrup, depending on how sweet you like the cocktail
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Pour smoked salt and granulated sugar onto a small plate and mix well. Moisten the rim of glass of choice and dip the rim of the glass into the salt and sugar mixture. Set aside to let dry. Can be done a few hours ahead of time.
- Add a few larger ice cubes to the rimmed cocktail glass.
- To a large cocktail shaker, add enough ice to fill half of the shaker, then add all the remaining cocktail ingredients. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds, and strain into the cocktail glass and enjoy.
Notes
Make a pitcher of cocktails! To the pitcher, add the following and stir well:
- A few cups of ice
- 3 3/4 cups tart cherry juice
- 2 1/2 cups mezcal
- 1 1/4 cups simple syrup
- 5 ounces Cointreau
- 2 1/2 ounces lime juice
